Thanks for this post. I’ve found some real differences between VPS hosts mainly in terms of performance and reliability (Amazon EC2 especially weak). I was with VPS.net which was great for a while but then their reliability went down the pan – it locked up 3 times in 2 weeks, once requiring a system edit to unlock the hard drive. Apparently their SAN had some issues. Anyway, I tried vpswebserver (http://www.vpswebserver.com/) and since joining they’ve been fine

The biggest advantage VPS hosting has over shared hosting is that it is secure and provides more control to the user.
Its advantage over dedicated hosting is that it is cheap.
So, VPS hosting is far better than shared hosting in terms of privileges, and better than dedicated hosting in terms of price.

Unlike with shared hosting, each virtual server is completely independent from the other virtual servers. So what happens on one virtual server will not affect anything on yours. You also get your own dedicated resources like CPU, memory, diskspace and bandwidth. How much you get, depends on the type of plan you choose.

In the beginning, shared hosting is perfect suitable for most people. But as you start making money with your sites and start getting a decent amount of traffic, it might be time to switch over to Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting.
